This TTL to RS485 converter converts a 3.3V to 5V TTL signal into a differential RS485 signal. This turns a short, interference-prone TTL connection into a much more robust RS485 connection. Useful for interface conversion, expanding nodes, and long-distance communication. The module operates in half-duplex mode. This means that transmitting and receiving share the same line.
The major advantage of this version is the galvanic isolation. Both the power supply and the signals are isolated. As a result, the risk of interference, ground loops, and damage caused by voltage spikes is reduced. The module also features additional protection. Examples include TVS surge protection, ESD protection up to 6 kV, and a self-resetting fuse. This makes it suitable for environments with longer cables, electric motors, or other sources of noise.
On the RS485 side, you can work point-to-point as well as point-to-multipoint. In theory, you can connect up to 32 nodes. With 16 nodes or more, it is wise to use repeaters. The RS485 transmission distance is approximately 1.2 km (depending on cable and environment). For termination, there is a 120 ohm resistor present that you can switch on by soldering.
The module is compact and easy to integrate thanks to castellated holes and an immersion gold finish. It also features status LEDs for RX, TX, and power. This makes testing and troubleshooting much faster.
